Description Marek Havrila 2020-01-14 15:49:13 UTC
Description of problem:
Yum prints misleading error message when trying to install module that does not have default stream and profile: "missing groups or modules". Modules are not missing, they are present in output of `yum module list`. They just lack defaults. I first hit this message during installation, since it is also processed by anaconda if one try to install such modules during installation of RHEL-8.2 and printed in dialog window during the installation.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
RHEL-8.2
yum 4.2.17

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run `yum module install pki-core`

Actual results:
Error: Problems in request:
missing groups or modules: pki-core

Expected results:
Different error message reflecting actual state. For example:
"Error: Problems in request:"
"Default stream and profile not defined for module: pki-core"
"No packages will be installed."

output of `yum module list`

Comment 4 Marek Blaha 2020-01-16 12:06:25 UTC
This is complete current result:

# yum module install pki-core
Last metadata expiration check: 1:05:34 ago on Thu Jan 16 05:58:08 2020.
No default profiles for module pki-core:10.6
Error: Problems in request:
missing groups or modules: pki-core

Given that the specific error message is present ('No default profiles for module pki-core:10.6'), would it be OK for you to change really misleading last line to general error:
broken groups or modules: pki-core. So the complete output would be:

# yum module install pki-core
Last metadata expiration check: 1:05:34 ago on Thu Jan 16 05:58:08 2020.
No default profiles for module pki-core:10.6
Error: Problems in request:
broken groups or modules: pki-core

Comment 5 Jaroslav Mracek 2020-01-21 14:45:41 UTC
I create a patch (https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf/pull/1579) that will report no default proffiles or missing profiles at all as:

Missing default profile will be reported as:
No default profiles for module pki-core:10.6
Error: Problems in request:
broken groups or modules: pki-core
