RPM will not allow me to install applications with versions > 3 or < 1.

Here's the following error message when I tried to install RPM from v7.0

[root@smullen]: /usr/local/downloads/applications # rpm -U
rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm 
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm cannot be installed

You are trying to install a version 4 package with an older, now legacy version
of rpm.
Upgrade to rpm-3.0.5 (all 5 packages) from Red Hat updates/errata. FWIW,
upgrading
to rpm-4.0 on a Red Hat 6/x/5.x system is not yet supported. If you wish to do
it, try
packages from ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/4.0. You will need the db3 packages
located
there as well. Make sure that
	1) you install all 5 rpm packages and the db3 package at the same time
	2) immediately do an "rpm --rebuilddb" to convert your database to db3
	format.
Again, the "production" version of rpm is 3.0.5 available from Red Hat updates.
