Unfortunately I think a shell wrapper is needed, as I'm not aware of anyway to do this without bundling qt. I'll try a few things though but I'm pessimistic about a compile time option. My solution for older versions was a bit hackish, but this doesn't work with the new qt front end. For fedora 31, this is the latest build that'll compile, so native Wayland won't ever land for f31. F32 or later is likely. Note that running the desktop file, e.g. from a launcher like gnome's GUI interface, will set this environment variable. This is solely an issue with running from terminal.
