Description of problem: 
With the recent fix for HDMI audio (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1818129) the only minor quibble left is that the audio doesn't switch automatically to the HDMI output when the cable is inserted.

There is some debate as to what is correct (see the above bug for questions from Christian Schaller and Karol Herbst). The fact that there are potentially multiple option available may be enough to just close this bug as "tough cookie, deal with it"; but my feeling is that if you plug in headphones it switches to those automatically and it would be nice if HDMI behaved the same.

How reproducible: 100%


Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plug in HDMI cable
2. Listen to your favourite music whilst doing your best dance moves
3. Realise that music is still coming over your PC speakers, tut a little bit and change configuration to select HDMI output
4. Continue dancing 

Actual results: Laptop speakers still used


Expected results: Audio from HDMI device

Sorry for being a bit slow responding to this one, so as you indicate already, and as discussed in the other bug you link to, what is the correct behavior here is not really obvious.

Going from laptop speakers to say HDMI TV speakers make sense, bit what if it is a HDMI computer monitor, then the speakers might sound just as tinny, or even more so then the laptop speakers.

And what to do when plugging in a HDMI cable into a desktop, maybe the audio-out jack of that desktop is not connected at all, but OTOH maybe it is connected to a stereo-amplifier with some serious speakers connected to it and switching to the tinny hdmi monitor speakers is very much not the right thing to do?

Luckily we have a solution (of sorts) for this sort of what would be the right default behavior? questions. We ask the GNOME design-team. I think that applies here too.

So Mark, can you please file an issue for the GNOME design-team to shine their light on this here:

and then we will see from there.

In the mean time, let me close this bug, since this is best discussed further with the design-team.

I concur - I'm happy to close this.
I'm OK with it staying on the PC unless the user switches it as the easy and safe option. I think I'll skip the gnome bug for now unless the issue comes up again with a brilliant reason to revisit
