Comment 4 Tomas Toth 2020-11-18 20:15:54 UTC
I would like to add that this may be related to a significant nouveau kernel regression in the new 5.9.8-200.fc33.
Reverting to 5.8.18-300.fc33 kernel fixes/avoids the issue.

Hardware: ASUS N73JQ

# lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [GeForce GT 425M] (rev a1)
# lspci -n | grep 01:00.0
01:00.0 0300: 10de:0df0 (rev a1)

KDE Session on X-server.

1) With the new kernel there is screen tearing (like something) while playing video in mplayer or scrolling in firefox. Not always but visible.

2) At some point a kworker process starts using 20%-70% CPU - gradually increasing. The desktop becomes less and less responsive to keyboard and mouse events. It gets difficult even to type 'reboot' in the terminal. This bug was captured during one such occasion. This can happen after just several minutes of usual desktop usage.

Please, let me know what other info I can provide.

I am back to 5.8.18-300.fc33 kernel as a workaround.

Thanks.

seemingly this bug did not kick in on fc32, running kernel 5.9.8-100.fc32.x86_64

Comment 14 Wojciech Pilorz 2020-12-08 22:49:24 UTC
I am also getting a lot of trouble with new kernels on my system; The last stable and good kernel on my system is the one from Fedora 31:
Linux version 5.6.19-200.fc31.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org) (gcc version 9.3.1 20200408 (Red Hat 9.3.1-2) (GCC)) #1 SMP Wed Jun 17 16:54:35 UTC 2020

With all later kernels ( 5.7, 5.8, 5.9 ) system either stops responding to keyboard (for 5.9 kernel Alt-SysRq seems to be working, at least partially, for 5.7, or 5.8 - not) or at some time gets a lot of exceptions and start to perform any video operation extremely slowly (kernel 5.9.10)
Recently I had to run e2fsck, etc to fix damaged root filesystem after an unclean system down.

I am using:
OS: Fedora 33 with KDE;
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor
motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. Crosshair IV Formula,
Video: Gigabyte GV-N450OC-1GI with Nvidia Geforce GTS 450, monitor connected to DVI;

When running kernel 'Linux version 5.9.10-200.fc33.x86_64' I am getting lots of exceptions like reported above:
( reported every 2-4 seconds, e.g.

Comment 17 Jerry C 2020-12-12 19:32:49 UTC
I have this issue too, interestingly, it only primarily happens when I have content active on 2nd monitor. As long as I keep all content on 1st monitor I won't have the issue for long periods of time (days), as soon as I drag a firefox or any kind of video window to 2nd monitor, I get the slow down, unusable, and high cpu on kworker as described above.

lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 [GeForce GTX 560 Ti] (rev a1)
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 [GeForce GTX 560 Ti] (rev a1)

Cards are hooked up via sli bridge, and both monitors are hooked to one card via dvi. Nothing specific has ever been manually configured, and everything on the box is from fedora repo's only, no other repos or outside software installed.

I can supply dmesg or anything else if requested.

Comment 20 Wojciech Pilorz 2020-12-14 21:05:30 UTC
Well, until today I thought kernel 5.6.19-200.fc31.x86_64 is reliable on my machine (
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF106 [GeForce GTS 450] (rev a1)
AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor
mobo: ASUSTeK Computer INC. Crosshair IV Formula
); Today I got
fifo: INTR 00800000
fifo: INTR 00010000: 00000003
and then several thousand of
kernel: nouveau 0000:05:00.0: fifo: SCHED_ERROR 14 []
messages (at rate about 24 messages per second)
with one message
kernel: nouveau 0000:05:00.0: fifo: PBDMA0: 00000300 [] ch 2 [003fbf7000 Xorg[2472]] subc 0 mthd 0000 data 00000000
and then another
kernel: nouveau 0000:05:00.0: fifo: PBDMA0: 00000b00 [] ch 2 [003fbf7000 Xorg[2472]] subc 0 mthd 0000 data 00000000
- the last one every 10-12 seconds (mixed with fifo: SCHED_ERROR 14 [] messages).

machine was just running X with multiple firefox and konsole windows, in one konsole session dnf shell with update command while this happened, I have found no way to display anything on the monitor, I had to reboot machine via Alt-Sysrq-b
So the problems nouveau are older than I thought...

Comment 21 Miroslav Jurkas 2020-12-14 23:43:24 UTC
I agree this problems reoccurs for some time (2-3 years). usually when I upgraded to latest fedora. I was using F31 before the upgrade to F33. With F31 the problem did not manifest for last 3-4 month (with latest updates installed). Initially I thought my video card is broken, than same about main board. IMO it is not a HW problem. Just there must be some issue with how nouveau kernel driver handles dual monitor. Now it is not even necessary to suspend the PC and wake it up. It happens after clear boot too.

Comment 22 Wojciech Pilorz 2020-12-15 23:57:42 UTC
I have tried kernel
Linux version 5.9.13-200.fc33.x86_64+debug (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org)
and kernel
Linux version 5.9.13-200.fc33.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org)

Debug kernel had some traces during boot [ see my comment to bug 1891616], but otherwise seems to work fine for quite a long time (but than X became totally unresponsive to keyboard and mouse);
Non-debug kernel some 12 minutes after boot had several (147) messages like this, most often every 2-14 seconds, sometimes more than 60 seconds from one to another recorded:

On the other hand, debug kernel Linux version 5.9.13-200.fc33.x86_64+debug (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org)
 did run fine for some time (about 2 hours), but then system became totally unresponsive to USB keyboard and mouse (even though I tried disconnecting and reconnecting a number of times) and I had to finally kill the system via Alt-SysRq (with blind typing);
There have been no exceptions at that time recorded in /var/log/messages, but I got a number of kwin_x11 errors and DRM timeouts:

I use only single monitor setup (a flat panel connected over DVI, HDMI port on PC not connected) and this is enough to get problems.
I have also upgraded from F31 to F33; When trying to use F31 with 5.7 or 5.8 kernel
I had noticed, that system had been usable for longer time if I had disabled GPU acceleration in Firefox and Google Chrome.

Now to be able to do anything more or less reliably on F33 I have to use old 5.6.19 kernel saved from F31, which works fine for me 99% of the time.

Somehow related might be https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/12/3/19

Hi. Even with a recent dnf update, the fault counter in Problem Reporting is now 52, and with kernel-core-5.9.13-200.fc33.x86_64 the screen freezes too much and is useless. I use a laptop. Below I copy some info. Regards.

Same problem with current F33 kernel "Linux version 5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64"
[ ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, BIOS 2101 09/14/2012,    AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor,
  2560 x 1440 monitor connected via DVI to Gigabyte GV-N450OC-1GI with Nvidia Geforce GTS 450, KDE desktop ]

For about 9 minutes since boot all was fine, then timeouts started to appear in dmesg and some 8 minutes later traces;
The system became barely usable ( while works almost always fine when booted with older F31 kernel 5.6.19-200.fc31.x86_64 ),
but I was able to reboot machine using Fedora menu.

Comment 40 Tomas Toth 2021-02-04 05:50:47 UTC
The fix has been merged to kernel 5.11-RC6 and it seems that it was also back-ported to 5.10.13 now.

Comment 41 Tomas Toth 2021-02-07 07:44:42 UTC
Kernel 5.10.13 (currently in testing) fixes the issue
  https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2021-585d94bc3f
I have been running it for about a day, there is no tearing no crash since.

Comment 42 Wojciech Pilorz 2021-02-07 22:47:42 UTC
Unfortunately kernel 5.10.13 still shows problems on my system.

When I booted debugging kernel (from Fedora33 /updates-testing) 5.10.13-200.fc33.x86_64+debug I got a message
"DMA-API: nouveau 0000:05:00.0: device driver tries to sync DMA memory it has not allocated"
and a trace.

When I booted regular kernel Linux version 5.10.13-200.fc33.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org)
there was no such message;
I started KDE with 3x3 virtual desktop, then 7 copies of glxgears and all was fine for some time (no visual artefacts);

However, when after some time I came back to the computer (the screen was already locked)
- mouse cursor did not move at all on the lock screen;
- I could not make the password prompt appear using the keyboard;
- I could not switch to text console using keyboard,

but I was able to sync and unmount filesystems and then reboot machine using Alt-SysRq

Please find below fragments from dmesg on debug kernel with traces,

then fragments from /var/log/messages on regular kernel boot (that with hangup).

This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

Comment 45 Ben Cotton 2021-11-04 14:00:16 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '33'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
