Description amit yadav 2020-11-25 16:44:00 UTC
Description of problem:

I am seeing two different behaviour with the gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator extension.

If I install the gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator extension from the RHEL7.9 optional repository(gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator.noarch rpm), it is showing a horizontal workspace on the upper panel of the screen.

If I install the same extension from the upstream using gnome-software, it is adding a drop down menu on the upper panel.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator-3.28.1-14.el7.noarch

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator on RHEL7.9 system
2. Enable the extension and check the status on the top panel.

Actual results:

This is showing a horizontal workspace, similar to that provided by the "gnome-shell-extension-horizontal-workspaces" extension. The only difference is that "gnome-shell-extension-horizontal-workspaces.noarch" adds horizontal workspaces on the lower panel. While "gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator.noarch" is adding a horizontal workspace on the top panel. It's not possible to add labels to these workspaces.

Expected results:
The "gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator.noarch" should provide workspace dropdown menu and allow us to add custom labels for the workspaces

Additional info:

The upstream version of "gnome-shell-extension-workspace-indicator.noarch" is providing drop down menus and allows to set custom labels for workspaces.

I have not tested it on RHEL7.8. But, possibly the issue started with RHEL7.8.

According to the https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1848058#c19

"Yes. Both switchers have been updated to either show a menu (as before) or a row of thumbnails. Which one is shown depends on the orientation of the workspace layout, not the extension that is used."

How can we change the orientation of the workspace layout? I have tried the latest packages from https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2020:3987 , But I am still seeing the same behaviour in gnome classic session.

As far as I know, it depends on the session choice you're using. Classic will have one, regular GNOME will have the other type. Not sure why the upstream version would be different.
