[patch] Update to 2.55 (#1919609)
the-new-hotness/release-monitoring.org's scratch build of libcap-2.55-1.fc32.src.rpm for rawhide failed http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=74770721 Note, 2.55+ includes the 'captree' binary as an installable build target, man page etc. I consider it a more sophisticated version of getpcaps. It, however, is written in Go so it requires golang to build it. It has no runtime dependencies on golang. [patch] Update to 2.57 (#1919609)
the-new-hotness/release-monitoring.org's scratch build of libcap-2.57-1.fc32.src.rpm for rawhide failed http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=75434138 Created attachment 1822413 [details]
This patch enables building the 'captree' binary in way that satisfies rpmbuild
I've been looking at the question of how to build the 'captree' binary as part of the libcap build. I found I needed this patch, plus a modified spec file. (I'll attach that too.)
Created attachment 1822414 [details]
A revised spec file to include 'captree' binary
The "Release" value in this SPEC file is '0' since I don't expect it will get adopted without further edits, but that's what I use when I upgrade the RPMs on my fedora machine.
This spec file cleans up the patching and builds with something closer to raw upstream sources. I think this should be equivalent to the official builds with the addition of building and installing the 'captree' binary. (The alternative is some more serious man page related edits, that I'd rather avoid!)
It refers to a patch that I just applied upstream which will be included in 2.58 whenever I release that.

A revised spec file to include 'captree' binary
This one has a Changelog entry with the right version number: 2.57-0

Example libcap.spec file to build 2.58
This spec file also builds the captree utility for libcap-2.58 (which I just released).

The audit (final report, 2023-05-10) was sponsored by the the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund, https://ostif.org/ (blog). Five issues were found. Four of them are addressed in this release. Each issue was labeled in the audit results as follows: - LCAP-CR-23-01 (SEVERITY) LOW (CVE-2023-2602) - found by David Gstir - LCAP-CR-23-02 (SEVERITY) MEDIUM (CVE-2023-2603) - found by Richard Weinberger - LCAP-CR-23-100 (SEVERITY) NONE - LCAP-CR-23-101 (SEVERITY) NONE - LCAP-CR-23-102 (SEVERITY) NONE * Man page style improvement from Emanuele Torre * Partially revive the ability to build the binaries fully statically. This was needed to make bleeding edge kernel debugging/testing via qemu+busybox work again. Addressing an issue I realized only when I tried to answer this stackexchange question. new 2.69 spec
2.69 spec with the changes from Andrew and separate package for captree
I am still being affected by the old version in use because I require the new APIs. Even Debian Stable already uses a more recent version than 2.66. I hope the version here in Fedora gets updated soon. Update: I created a PR I'm working on with all the contributions from here to bring it up to 2.69, plus some other modernization of the tests. I'm also in the process of becoming a co-maintainer to make this happen. Thank you! This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.
