I think this may also be caused by gjs 1.67.3 (as https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1940171 is). I just downgraded to gjs 1.67.2 to avoid that bug, and since I rebooted this crash also has not shown up. Similar problem has been detected: it happened on boot. reporter: libreport-2.14.0 backtrace_rating: 4 cgroup: 0::/user.slice/user-1000.slice/user/session.slice/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.UsbProtection.service cmdline: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection crash_function: get_current_screen_saver_status executable: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection journald_cursor: s=ba4d2e94df984d1ea3b677630f6ffd97;i=f20ae;b=b9dd16257f3e4a4e99235b3e778efdf9;m=3588276f;t=5be7fc0811f81;x=e21736c28fb10c7 kernel: 5.11.9-300.fc34.x86_64 package: gnome-settings-daemon-40.0-1.fc34 reason: gsd-usb-protection killed by SIGSEGV rootdir: / runlevel: N 5 type: CCpp uid: 1000 Similar problem has been detected: No idea about the cause. Some times with Firefox, Telegram rarely with Discord open. Even with a game open it would happen and the game window becomes invisible even in the overview, with the borders that appear when hovering a window bing the only way to find it to try closing it. With some frequency, Gnome will freeze and freeze the windows opened and restart/reload. When it happens some windows or desktop miniatures, despite being open, can´t be seen until a do a manual reload. It would happen on Fedora 33 and Gnome 3.38, but with less frequency and the dump in the logs would refer to gnome-shell process instead of gsd-usb-protection. I was using Feora 33 and upgraded to Fedora 34 Beta, because of the frequency of this problem and to use the defaults, I decided to format and do a fresh install, but it persists. reporter: libreport-2.14.0 backtrace_rating: 4 cgroup: 0::/user.slice/user-1000.slice/user/session.slice/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.UsbProtection.service cmdline: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection crash_function: get_current_screen_saver_status executable: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection journald_cursor: s=ec0d9a4778834be5a8e8c9c01d2266d4;i=4e264;b=eabc114314014e81bddf8debcd8037b4;m=14df6a0d51;t=5bfc849fb76ef;x=6a862254dc5ca5a8 kernel: 5.11.12-300.fc34.x86_64 package: gnome-settings-daemon-40.0-1.fc34 reason: gsd-usb-protection killed by SIGSEGV rootdir: / runlevel: N 5 type: CCpp uid: 1000 Similar problem has been detected: Normal browser/system usage with Discord app, Tilix terminal and Chromium Freeworld open reporter: libreport-2.14.0 backtrace_rating: 4 cgroup: 0::/user.slice/user-1000.slice/user/session.slice/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.UsbProtection.service cmdline: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection crash_function: get_current_screen_saver_status executable: /usr/libexec/gsd-usb-protection journald_cursor: s=ec0d9a4778834be5a8e8c9c01d2266d4;i=dd8ef;b=eabc114314014e81bddf8debcd8037b4;m=2351a57b89;t=5bfdd9e3ef128;x=7100dfe6142720c3 kernel: 5.11.12-300.fc34.x86_64 package: gnome-settings-daemon-40.0-1.fc34 reason: gsd-usb-protection killed by SIGSEGV rootdir: / runlevel: N 5 type: CCpp uid: 1000 This should be fixed by now. For people who hit it recently, were you using the plain Beta install package set without yet having updated to current F34? (In reply to Adam Williamson from comment #21) > This should be fixed by now. For people who hit it recently, were you using > the plain Beta install package set without yet having updated to current F34? Not sure what your asking here. I was using an upgraded version from Fedora 33 (which I was upgrading since 31). Because of this problem, some weird behaviours probably because its Beta nature and being fastest way to try solving it and to be able to use all new defaults, including partitioning with no SWAP etc, I decided to realize a fresh installation of Fedora 34 Beta. This seems to also happening at the login process. Happened just now after I restarted the system to boot to latest installed kernel 5.11.13-300.fc34.x86_64. Thanks. Hmm, if you did an upgrade, you should have fairly recent packages, so there may still be a broken case here indeed. Thanks for the info. Does the broken desktop behaviour seem to actually correlate (in terms of timing) with the gsd-usb-protection crashes in the system logs? (In reply to Adam Williamson from comment #23) > Thanks. Hmm, if you did an upgrade, you should have fairly recent packages, > so there may still be a broken case here indeed. Thanks for the info. > > Does the broken desktop behaviour seem to actually correlate (in terms of > timing) with the gsd-usb-protection crashes in the system logs? Yes, it seems to be it. Strangely similar behaviour was occurring with Fedora 33, but the logs would dump a gnome-shell error and on my machine I would just see it in the logs, but a friends machine with much less memory (mine 16GB hers 4GB) would completely freeze for a while or freeze to be only solvable by restarting (forced shutdown). Could someone with this issue please post logs of their session (best would be the full session logs, just for the user should be enough, e.g. `journalctl --user -b0` or using). This is confusing, the crash happening should mean that something is messed up with the GNOME Shell Screensaver module basically. One can argue we should just fix the crash itself (it is simple), but this is still weird and I would really like to get to the root of this. The login refresh behaviour is actually Variety (Wallpaper changer) that started doing it. It used to just update the overview, now it updates the whole screen if the "Change wallpaper at start" option is marked. *** Bug 1946129 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 1943683 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** I just did a update and re-enabled the USB protection service as requested on 1946129. Attachments were not working for me. If the gnome-shell crashes (Process nnnnn (gnome-shell) of user 1000 dumped core.) are related to the extension, it's just a coincidence since I don't keep it enabled since it was causing problems on previous versions of Fedora. And my previous install, that I upgrade from F33 to F34, it was disabled since Fedora 31 (F31->F32->F33->F34). It just got enabled because of some other bug then. I am not sure how it got enabled, since a manually disabled it. We have an upstream issue for the "toggling down object GSettings that's already queued to toggle up" crash already: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gjs/-/issues/380 OK, I think we have an upstream bug/fix that might explain that some people are having issues: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-session/-/merge_requests/64 i.e. there is a race in gnome-session, causing an unresolvable circular condition where gnome-session-binary apparently waits on the screensaver and the other way around. This could explain random failures leading to the crash that people are seeing. New upstream MR: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-session/-/merge_requests/67 PR to update gnome-session (contains scratch build): https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gnome-session/pull-request/7 I have verified that the above gnome-session build still fires the appropriate events when the screen is locked/unlocked. Will wait a bit for upstream review of the MR before merging, but thanks! Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 34 on 2022-06-07. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a 'version' of '34'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version' to a later Fedora Linux version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora Linux 34 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version prior to this bug being closed. I think this was fixed, as the only later reports are from people installing from the live image, before they updated. |
