Description Christian Horn 2021-03-15 01:39:07 UTC
Created attachment 1763277 [details]

Description of problem:
localization german: bad translation; "bonding device" is translated to "Bündelverbindung".
A customer complained this is a bad translation, and I agree.
Can we may be stick with "bond Verbindung", or something else? We have English words entering the German language and getting used like German words. Trying to forcibly use a German term for everything might not lead to best results.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
rhel8.3GA

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run anaconda, select Deutsch
2. create a bond device, appears as "Bündel-Verbindung 1".

Also, anslaving bond-slaves then, these are called "bond0 Sklave 1", "bond0 Sklave 2". I will open a bz for the "Sklave" by itself, but "bond0" anyway appears then for the slaves - why not use it also for the whole device name like English does?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for reporting. The German upstream language repo can be found at:

https://translate.fedoraproject.org/projects/anaconda/rhel-8/de/

https://translate.fedoraproject.org/projects/anaconda/master/de/

Please do you have access there? Please can you fix the reported problem?

If you can't do that, I can fix the problem myself. But I need to know 2 things: "wrong version" + "correct version". Is that something you can provide to us?

Thank you, Luděk

Also here I did not find the strings on in "anaconda", so here is the correction in plain:

In English, we see: "Bond connection 1"

German, wrong: "Bündel-Verbindung 1"

German, correct: "Bond-Verbindung 1"

I was thinking quite some time what the correct German should be here,
but going with the English "Bond" here seems like the best variant.
"Bündel" means kind of "stack", but it is considered out of place here,
also a customer directly commented that way.
English terms are used in many places, I think here it's also good to
use them.

I verified also Fedora34 still has the issue.

Comment 3 Ludek Janda 2021-05-06 08:20:24 UTC
Hi Christian,

in that case I am afraid this ticket was filed against a wrong component.

According to my internal records, the string Bond connection does not come from Anaconda but from Network Manager.

The only apearence of the word "Bond" in anaconda is in these 2 cases:

English: Bond %(interface_name)s (%(list_of_slaves)s) connected
German: Bond %(interface_name)s (%(list_of_slaves)s) aktiv

English: Bond
German: Bond

Source: https://translate.fedoraproject.org/translate/anaconda/rhel-8/de/?q=Bond&sort_by=-priority%2Cposition&offset=1

You are suggesting to keep the word "Bond" in English even for German. Then it seems to be that way in Anaconda now.

Please can I close this ticket now as Fixed in current release? Are you okay with that?

Thank you.

I think this also comes from nm-applet..
