Did you burn this CD yourself?

Most likely you have a bad CD.

no, this was purchased from redhat. the text mode install works fine (which is 
ok with me)

hmmm ... very interesting ... is this error reproducible (ie for all GUI
installs this occurs for you)?  If so, could you attach a list of the hardware
your machine has ...?  We have not seen these errors here in test, but maybe if
we configured a similar machine we can reproduce it ...
