Patel-Schneider reported in February that > In rawhide (kernel 5.12.0-0.rc0!) the wireless comes up fine. Peter, I would appreciate if you could chime in here. Are the errors in my kernel log above what you saw on your XPS 13 9310? Based on your previous input, kernel 5.12.0 should work. However, I think it's also kind of expected that the hardware support in the 5.12 kernel is not yet complete. Kalle Valo wrote on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=211569 > But unfortunately it was crashing and I couldn't take it to v5.12 (the deadline was yesterday). So it will have to wait for v5.13, if we can fix the crashes. And I'm optimistic we can, but I cannot promise anything. I'm not heavily using that laptop, but WiFi was working with 5.12.0 and then with Fedora 34 beta. I'll see if there are kernel errors tomorrow. Yes, I am seeing similar errors in Fedora 34 beta, kernel 5.11.14-300. Nonetheless WiFi comes up fine on initial boot. What does not work is suspending - the laptop screens turn off but turn on again in a few seconds. So I'm not sure whether the system is even suspending and thus whether WiFi recovers after a suspend. I'm not sure why suspend isn't working. I'm seeing very similar results with kernel 5.12.0-0.rc0. Do you want the exact messages? Kernel 5.12.0 also does not suspend. Created attachment 1773330 [details]

Thank you, Peter! Are you sure that the crash in ath11k_mac_op_unassign_vif_chanctx was not shown in your kernel log? > Nonetheless WiFi comes up fine on initial boot. This is interesting. Would love to get Kalle's feedback, too. We have different hardware. My BIOS is recent but maybe not the newest.

I have asked for help on the ath11k list: http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/ath11k/2021-April/001199.html The reason I put in the comment about different hardware is that there are comments about updating the system BIOS to change something related to the AX500. From https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=211569#c3 Currently I know of two options to use AX500 on Dell XPS 13 9310: 1) Update BIOS to version 1.1.4 or newer, that way ath11k will get 32 MSI vectors. Upgrade kernel to v5.11-rc1 or newer, based on the reports it should work reasonably well with 32 MSI vectors. I don't know whether this is a problem with the XPS 15 9500. (Why, oh why, can't Dell provide a good way to describe all the different XPS laptops that it has put out - adding in a random 4-digit number is terrible.) Getting back to this. Changing the scope of this bug ticket; so that when we close this we know that the Wifi hardware of the Dell XPS 15 9500 i9 (AX500-DBS / QCA6390) works with Fedora 34. The symptoms have evolved a bit, but things still do not work. Relevant package versions: - linux-firmware-20210511-120.fc34 - kernel package 5.12.6-300.fc34 Current symptoms: I boot the system and cannot discover Wifi networks. `dmesg` shows: ath11k_pci ... firmware crashed: MHI_CB_SYS_ERROR ath11k_pci ... failed to send WMI_VDEV_SET_PARAM_CMDID In https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=264268 it was suggested that the `MHI_CB_SYS_ERROR` symptom has to do with the problem described in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210923. A solution that was offered and confirmed to work by more than one person was to > adding "memmap=12M\$20M" to the grub boot options. I am trying this next, but again I think the goal is to make this set of hardware work 'out of the box'. Update: I added memmap=12M\$20M to the boot options. Saw no improvement. Still got the `firmware crashed: MHI_CB_SYS_ERROR` error in the kernel log. Next I tried again with latest kernel and linux-firmware packages from rawhide but that created new, unrelated problems -- so no new insights from that side of things. I did `sudo dnf downgrade kernel` again to go back to original f34 kernel package. $ uname -a Linux xps15 5.13.5-200.fc34.x86_64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 25 16:19:01 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux As of Kalle Valo's input on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210923#c9 these checksums of the firmware files look good: $ cd /lib/firmware/ath11k/QCA6390/hw2.0/ $ cat amss.bin.xz | unxz | md5sum a101dc90f8e876f39383b60c9da64ec4 - $ cat board-2.bin.xz | unxz | md5sum 4c0781f659d2b7d6bef10a2e3d457728 - $ cat m3.bin.xz | unxz | md5sum d4c912a3501a3694a3f460d13de06d28 - Kernel boot options, in particular the memmap param: $ cat /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=(hd0,gpt7)/vmlinuz-5.13.5-200.fc34.x86_64 [.....] quiet memmap=14M$31M Discovering WiFis now works, but upon authentication/connect, there's a crash in ath11k_mac_op_unassign_vif_chanctx: $ dmesg | grep ath11k [ 15.158618] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: BAR 0: assigned [mem 0xb4200000-0xb42fffff 64bit] [ 15.158646] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002) [ 15.158951] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: qca6390 hw2.0 [ 15.547234] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: chip_id 0x0 chip_family 0xb board_id 0xff soc_id 0xffffffff [ 15.547238] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: fw_version 0x101c06cc fw_build_timestamp 2020-06-24 19:50 fw_build_id [ 15.740574] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0 wlp108s0: renamed from wlan0 [ 25.891940] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: firmware crashed: MHI_CB_SYS_ERROR [ 26.938700] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to synchronize setup for vdev 0 start: -110 [ 26.938712] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to start vdev 0 addr 9c:b6:d0:3e:b2:95 on freq 5180: -110 [ 26.938718] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to delay vdev start: -110 [ 26.938727] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to send WMI_PEER_DELETE cmd [ 26.938732] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to delete peer vdev_id 0 addr 2c:91:ab:75:cf:be ret -108 [ 26.938738] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: Failed to add station: 2c:91:ab:75:cf:be for VDEV: 0 [ 26.945307] WARNING: CPU: 10 PID: 1554 at drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath11k/mac.c:5582 ath11k_mac_op_unassign_vif_chanctx+0x17e/0x1d0 [ath11k] [ 26.945341] Modules linked in: michael_mic nft_objref nf_conntrack_netbios_ns nf_conntrack_broadcast nft_fib_inet nft_fib_ipv4 nft_fib_ipv6 nft_fib nft_reject_inet nf_reject_ipv4 nf_reject_ipv6 nft_reject nft_ct nft_chain_nat ip6table_nat ip6table_mangle ip6table_raw ip6table_security iptable_nat nf_nat nf_conntrack nf_defrag_ipv6 nf_defrag_ipv4 iptable_mangle iptable_raw iptable_security ip_set nf_tables nfnetlink ip6table_filter ip6_tables iptable_filter sunrpc vfat fat qrtr_mhi snd_sof_pci_intel_cnl snd_sof_intel_hda_common soundwire_intel soundwire_generic_allocation soundwire_cadence snd_sof_intel_hda snd_sof_pci snd_sof_xtensa_dsp snd_hda_codec_hdmi snd_sof intel_tcc_cooling snd_soc_skl snd_soc_hdac_hda snd_hda_ext_core snd_soc_sst_ipc snd_soc_sst_dsp snd_soc_acpi_intel_match snd_soc_acpi snd_soc_core snd_ctl_led snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_compress snd_pcm_dmaengine x86_pkg_temp_thermal intel_powerclamp snd_hda_codec_generic ac97_bus qrtr coretemp ns snd_hda_intel ath11k_pci [ 26.945422] snd_intel_dspcfg iTCO_wdt ath11k kvm_intel snd_intel_sdw_acpi intel_pmc_bxt ee1004 qmi_helpers snd_hda_codec iTCO_vendor_support mei_hdcp dell_laptop ledtrig_audio intel_rapl_msr kvm mac80211 snd_hda_core uvcvideo snd_hwdep dell_smm_hwmon snd_seq dell_wmi irqbypass videobuf2_vmalloc rapl videobuf2_memops dell_smbios snd_seq_device videobuf2_v4l2 intel_cstate cfg80211 dcdbas snd_pcm hci_uart intel_uncore videobuf2_common snd_timer hid_sensor_als btqca i2c_i801 btrtl pcspkr snd hid_sensor_trigger videodev dell_wmi_sysman dell_wmi_descriptor intel_wmi_thunderbolt wmi_bmof mhi btbcm i2c_smbus soundcore hid_sensor_iio_common mei_me btintel industrialio_triggered_buffer libarc4 kfifo_buf thunderbolt bluetooth joydev mc mei industrialio processor_thermal_device idma64 processor_thermal_rfim processor_thermal_mbox processor_thermal_rapl intel_rapl_common ucsi_acpi typec_ucsi intel_soc_dts_iosf rfkill intel_pch_thermal int3403_thermal typec int340x_thermal_zone int3400_thermal [ 26.945586] RIP: 0010:ath11k_mac_op_unassign_vif_chanctx+0x17e/0x1d0 [ath11k] [ 26.945762] ? ath11k_mac_op_bss_info_changed+0x3c/0xc70 [ath11k] [ 26.946506] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to submit WMI_VDEV_STOP cmd [ 26.946512] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to stop WMI vdev 0: -108 [ 26.946516] ath11k_pci 0000:6c:00.0: failed to stop vdev 0: -108 [ 31.208574] ath11k_warn: 8 callbacks suppressed I reported https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213937 upstream, focusing on the 5.13.5 kernel and the crash in ath11k_mac_op_unassign_vif_chanctx upon connect.
