Description Jos de Kloe 2021-05-26 06:57:15 UTC
Description of problem:

Emacs runs fine, but when closed it consistently displays this type of message:

emacs stderr: Gtk-Message: 08:45:58.267: Failed to load module "colorreload-gtk-module"

and since it is displayed on stderr the user may get the idea that this is some kind of error.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
emacs-27.2-2.fc34.x86_64

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start emacs from the command line in an xterm terminal outside the KDE desktop environment (I use the fvwm window manager)
2. use the editor
3. close the editor

Actual results:

the mentioned error is displayed

Expected results:

since emacs works just fine there should be no message displayed to stderr.

Additional info:

installing the kde-gtk-config package provides libcolorreload-gtk-module.so which solves the issue. So this seems a missing dependency for the emacs package in fedora.

But I find it rather strange that emacs (which is not a software created or maintained by the KDE project as far as I know) depends on a module provided for the KDE desktop only.

Comment 1 Scott Talbert 2021-05-26 13:40:44 UTC
Strange indeed. I don't see this problem on Gnome (and I don't have kde-gtk-config installed). I don't see how emacs would be able to pull in the kde-gtk-config package only when the user is using KDE, so it seems like this should probably be pulled in by some KDE desktop metapackage. I'd suggest reassigning this to some KDE package, but I'm not sure which one.

Comment 2 Dan Čermák 2021-06-12 10:28:42 UTC
Interesting, I am using emacs with i3 and I also don't have kde-gtk-config installed but I don't see such a message displayed to stderr.

Can you maybe try this with emacs -Q and other desktop environments/window managers?

Comment 3 Jos de Kloe 2021-06-12 11:14:59 UTC
in fvwm on f34 I still get the same warning when using: emacs -Q

also:
in xfce I do see it
in lxde I do see it
in Openbox I do see it

in Gnome I dont see it
also not in Gnome-Classic or Gnome-on-Xorg

it doesn't matter what type of terminal emulator I choose.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 34 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 34 on 2022-06-07.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '34'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 34 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 5 Ben Cotton 2022-06-07 20:45:17 UTC
Fedora Linux 34 entered end-of-life (EOL) status on 2022-06-07.

Fedora Linux 34 is no longer maintained, which means that it
will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we
are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
