Description Nicholas Hakobian 2006-06-26 01:45:35 UTC
Description of problem:
Just updated kernel 2.6.16-1.2122 to 2.6.17-1.2139. On reboot into the new
kernel everything looked fine (except for the quiet kernel option; this is
documented elsewhere). Upon logging in, found that there was no wireless
connection. ipw2200 module marked as loaded in /proc/modules.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.17-1.2139

How reproducible:
Unknown

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have a fully working kernel 2.6.16
2. Update to 2.6.17
3. Problem results

Actual results:
Wireless card/driver not working. iwconfig does not list adapter

Expected results:
Wireless card working. iwconfig does list adapter

Additional info:
None.

Doing more careful looking at the /var/messages file, I found that the problem
is not with the driver, but that the driver was updated and required a new
firmware version in order to operate. In kernel 2.6.16, firmware version 2.4 was
required, but in kernel 2.6.17 which contains ipw2200 version 1.1.1, firmware
version 3.0 is required.

The new firmware was installed and wireless card works correctly. Drawback with
this is that firmware v. 2.4 will need to be reinstalled if a fallback to 2.6.16
is necessary.
