Description Sayan Das 2021-08-06 13:51:59 UTC
Description of problem:

Update the foreman-discovery-image to inject the latest e1000e NIC drivers for I219-LM network cards

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Satellite 6.7\6.8\6.9
foreman-discovery-image-3.7.4-2.iso

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable foreman-discovery feature in satellite and acquire the discovery ISO
2. Boot a "Dell Latitude 5420" laptop or "Dell Precision 3450" workstation with the help of the discovery ISO
3. Wait for the screen where it will allow to select network adapter

Actual results:

On the "Primary Interface" selection screen, there is nothing to select.

Expected results:

It should be able to detect the onboard NIC and allow selecting the same to continue with the discovery.

Additional info:

* As per https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2521021 , most of the latest PCI IDs of I219 Ethernet cards are supported on RHEL 8.2 (kernel-4.18.0-193.el8) and above.

* I have come across https://community.theforeman.org/t/update-driver-included-in-discovery-image/21330 and https://community.theforeman.org/t/building-discovery-image-on-el8/23719

* So either there is a need of Foreman Discovery Image build on top of >= RHEL 8.2 or on RHEL 7.9 based image, someway the latest e1000e NIC drivers need to be injected.

Lukas, any thoughts on the level of effort and feasability of this one?

Comment 5 Lukas Zapletal 2021-12-20 12:56:03 UTC
We are working on FDI build on EL8, it should be part of Satellite 7.0.

Comment 6 Lukas Zapletal 2022-01-27 14:17:39 UTC
For the record, FDI 4.0 released upstream can be used with Satellite 6.9 and 6.10: https://downloads.theforeman.org/discovery/releases/4.0/

We are planning to release EL8 build of FDI as a Tech Preview in 7.0 and the final release is planned for 7.1.

Comment 10 Lukas Zapletal 2022-02-15 10:01:40 UTC
For the record, Satellite 7.0 is coming with FDI based on EL7, we have some internal builds on EL8 but we are ironing out some issues. The EL8 FDI build is planned for 7.1.

This bug should be ON_DEV.

Comment 28 sganar 2023-02-28 11:41:13 UTC
Verified.

Tested on Satellite 6.13.0 Snap 12.0
FDI is built on EL8 (foreman-discovery-image-4.1.0-10.el8sat.noarch) which supports most of the latest PCI IDs of I219 Ethernet cards(https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2521021)

Observation:
Tried discovery based PXE/PXELess provisioning using latest FDI and I see no issues.
Tested provisioning RHEL7,RHEL8, RHEL9 with BIOS and UEFI.
