Hmm...from my understanding, if CVO does not introduce the related PR[1] back to 4.8, this change would not work.

Could you please help confirm would we get [1] backported to 4.8?

Yes, this would need to be back-ported to 4.8 for this, cleaning up 4.8, to work. And no, there aren't any current plans to back-port it.
