Description Tomáš Hrnčiar 2021-12-20 12:07:24 UTC
player fails to build with Python 3.11.0a3.

-- Could NOT find PythonInterp (missing: PYTHON_EXECUTABLE)
CMake Error at libplayerinterface/CMakeLists.txt:4 (MESSAGE):
No Python interpreter found. Cannot continue.

I think, the problem is that somewhere in CMake is missing support for Python 3.11. I proposed patch to CMake to add it, but it seems like it's not enough for player.

For the build logs, see:
https://copr-be.cloud.fedoraproject.org/results/@python/python3.11/fedora-rawhide-x86_64/03053921-player/

For all our attempts to build player with Python 3.11, see:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/python/python3.11/package/player/

Testing and mass rebuild of packages is happening in copr. You can follow these instructions to test locally in mock if your package builds with Python 3.11:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/python/python3.11/

Let us know here if you have any questions.

Python 3.11 is planned to be included in Fedora 37. To make that update smoother, we're building Fedora packages with all pre-releases of Python 3.11.
A build failure prevents us from testing all dependent packages (transitive [Build]Requires), so if this package is required a lot, it's important for us to get it fixed soon.
We'd appreciate help from the people who know this package best, but if you don't want to work on this now, let us know so we can try to work around it on our side.

Comment 1 Nicolas Chauvet (kwizart) 2021-12-21 15:31:54 UTC
There is a downstream patch applied in player player-3.1.0-cmake-find-python-version.patch maybe that's the reason of the issue ?

Comment 2 Tomáš Hrnčiar 2021-12-22 07:34:26 UTC
I've tried to build it without the patch and player was able to detect the correct Python version, but then it failed with:

-- Found PythonLibs: /usr/lib64/libpython3.11.so (found version "3.11.0a3")
-- Python bindings for C client library will be built
Python 3.11.0a3
CMake Error at client_libs/libplayerc/bindings/python/CMakeLists.txt:56 (STRING):
STRING sub-command REGEX, mode REPLACE needs at least 6 arguments total to
  command.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 36 development cycle.
Changing version to 36.

Hello,

Please note that this comment was generated automatically. If you feel that this output has mistakes, please contact me via email (mhroncok).

All subpackages of a package against which this bug was filled are now installable or removed from Fedora 37.

Thanks for taking care of it!
