after updating package iputils to 20180629-8.el8
nagios reports state unknown:
	CRITICAL - Could not interpret output from ping command
rolling back to iputils-20180629-7.el8.x86_64 solves the problem.

either make output of ping compatible again or update nagios-plugins-ping
