Description of problem:
I am not sure how it happened.

I was doing "dnf update".

While dnf update was in progress in one terminal window, I opened another and pinged a couple of websites, then came back to the original one.

The dnf update ceased to be displayed (it was in the "cleanup" phase).
I eventually terminated the process, or at least I thought.

When I shut down the computer, linux complained that there was a process still in progress (though I do not know which, as all apps were closed).

Thanks for a bug report. I guess the update updated gnome-software 41.0-5 (or later, but before 41.1) to 41.3-2, because the error:

> Settings schema 'org.gnome.software' does not contain a key named 'required-repos'

references a key, which had been added as a custom patch for bug #2010353 and then removed accidentally. This is fixed in 41.3-2, referenced in bug #2010353, from which I guess you just updated the gnome-software to this version (hence it's mentioned in the description), but the update process (within dnf) did not recompile the GSettings schmeas, thus the gnome-software aborted due to that.

I believe when you run it again and will open the Software Repositories dialog, then it'll work fine.

Similar problem has been detected:

This always occurs at night when the screen is off.  It is not reproducible regularly - it might happen one night a week.

Do you have /var/log/messages from the crash, please? The original report claims missing "required-repos" key, which is added in yours 41.3-2. I double-checked that here.

When I execute from a terminal:

   $ gsettings get org.gnome.software required-repos

then it properly reads the value. The code in question is also executed when opening the Soft3ware Repositories dialog, which works just fine here as well.

I though the GSetting schema was not properly updated with the gnome-software, or there was running a previous version with cached GSettings schemas (update of the gnome-software does not restart it on its own), but that feels even less likely than the stale GSetting schema. The later case might fix itself on restart of the gnome-software, but you claim you see it regularly.

Could you try the above command and also open the Software Repositories dialog, please?

I do not have a /var/log/messages file; I assume the data you want is in the journal, if you let me know what you want me to search for I can perhaps grep journalctl.  I took a stab at it below.  Every time I start gnome-software, it fails the same way.

Thanks for the update. You are right, the log is in the journal. What you pasted shows the crash, due to the not being found in the GSettings schema file.


Could you run this program forma terminal, please?

   $ cat /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/org.gnome.software.gschema.xml | grep required-repo

it should return:

       <key name="required-repos" type="as">

when the .gschema file is properly installed. If it'll be, then maybe the newly installed file was not compiled properly for some reason. It can be verified by:

   $ glib-compile-schemas --targetdir=/tmp /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
   $ diff /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled /tmp/gschemas.compiled

where the diff should not claim any difference.

Thanks. I believe from this the .gschema file had been properly installed, but the trigger (or whatever takes care of recompile) did not run, thus the gschemas.compiled file was not updated for some reason.

When you recompile the file manually:

   $ sudo glib-compile-schemas --targetdir=/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/

then the command:

   $ gsettings get org.gnome.software required-repos

will work properly, the same as the gnome-software itself.

The file attributes of the /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled may show when it had been updated the last time.

Manual compile of the gschema files had been remove ~4 years ago:

I do not know where to move this bug to, the "trigger" possibly did not run, or it used a wrong schemas set or something else failed, but what is responsible to this I do not know.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 35 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 35 on 2022-12-13.
