patch for this issue none

Description pbialk 2006-10-05 11:12:08 UTC
Description of problem:

When I disable UTF-8, console (text mode, framebuffer vga=791) will not display
my national characters, and TUI apps which displays frames looks ugly

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

2.6.17-1.2187_FC5

How reproducible:
My /etc/sysconfig/i18n looks as follows:
LANG="pl_PL"
SYSFONT="lat2-sun16"
SYSFONTACM="iso02"

Steps to Reproduce:
1. set /etc/sysconfig/i18n as shown above
2. reboot system
3. try to use any console software, e.g. Midnight Commander

Actual results:
fonts and tables are unreadable and unusable

Expected results:
software has to work as in older kernels e.g. 2.6.15

Additional info:
The only solution for me at this time is disable redhat patch #2104 and
recompile kernel rpm. so PLEASE DISABLE THIS UGLY PATCH OR FIND A SOLUTION (
kernel parameter or something ) to disable this behaviour

Lot of people still uses old, closed-source, non-UTF applications, and don't
need UTF-8 on text console, so why RedHat will break this?

Bill, this was your idea I believe ? :-)

Comment 2 Dave Jones 2006-10-16 21:09:27 UTC
A new kernel update has been released (Version: 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5)
based upon a new upstream kernel release.

Please retest against this new kernel, as a large number of patches
go into each upstream release, possibly including changes that
may address this problem.

This bug has been placed in NEEDINFO state.

please check you only have one version of device-mapper & lvm2
installed. See bug 207474 for further details.

If this bug is a problem preventing you from installing the
release this version is filed against, please see bug 169613.

If this bug has been fixed, but you are now experiencing a different
problem, please file a separate bug for the new problem.

Thank you.

Created attachment 138712 [details]
patch for this issue

Try the attached patches for /etc/profile.d/lang.* and /sbin/setsysfont. Does
this solve the problem for you?
