.The `ipa user-del --preserve user_login` output no longer indicates that the user was deleted Previously, if you ran the `ipa user-del --preserve user_login` command to preserve a user account, the output incorrectly returned the message `Deleted user “user_login”`. With this update, the output now returns `Preserved user “user_login”`.

Description Florence Blanc-Renaud 2022-06-22 18:50:41 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #2022028 +++

To preserve a user account, the administrator can use the `ipa user-del` command with the `--preserve` option, which works as intended. However, in the output, it says that the user account has been deleted rather then preserved. In combination with the fact that we use "del" in the command, this can be confusing.

One customer has filed a DDF bug about this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2014823

The documentation team has extended the introduction and added a note about the output to decrease the potential for confusion. However, a much better option would be to change at least the output wording.

The summary can be overridden. There are few examples in the idviews and trust plugins.

Comment 3 Florence Blanc-Renaud 2022-06-23 06:50:51 UTC
Note to doc team: the guide "Managing IdM users, groups, hosts, and access control rules" contains a note in the section "Preserving users using the command line" [1] that can be removed as soon as this fix is shipped in RHEL 9:

----- 8< -----
Note
Despite the output saying the user account was deleted, it has been preserved.
