Hi,

I recently installed Red Hat linux 7 on a machine in our cluster. 
Everything was working perfectly for about a week.  We had installed the
old libc libraries using the rpm for  compatability under RedHat6.2 in
order to run Matlab5.x and Matlab6.  This also seemed to be working fine
for several days.

With no other changes to the system  since the basic installation, suddenly
"ls" no longer lists files for non-root users.

Is this a problem with the old libraries, or has the system been
compromised?

There is no problem with the compatibility libraries (unless you installed them 
to replace the current ones, make sure you installed libc and ld.so, but not 
glibc for the old libraries!).

If you did it correctly, ls not working is someone else's doing.
