Description Ben Cotton 2022-12-06 17:48:54 UTC
This is a tracking bug for Change: Ostree Native Container (Phase 2, stable)
For more details, see: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/OstreeNativeContainerStable

Continue the work done in https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/OstreeNativeContainer but in an officially stable format, and expanded to cover more OSTree-based editions. This goes "all in" on being container-native and significantly changes the technology and user emphasis.

If you encounter a bug related to this Change, please do not comment here. Instead create a new bug and set it to block this bug.

Comment 1 Ben Cotton 2023-02-07 14:27:33 UTC
Today we reached the Code Complete (Testable) milestone on the F38 schedule: https://fedorapeople.org/groups/schedule/f-38/f-38-key-tasks.html

At this time, all F38 Changes should be complete enough to be testable. You can indicate this by setting this tracker to the MODIFIED status. If the Change is 100% code complete, you can set the tracker to ON_QA. If you need to defer this Change to F39, please NEEDINFO me.

Changes that have not reached at least the MODIFIED status will be given to FESCo for evaluation of contingency plans.

Comment 2 Ben Cotton 2023-02-22 19:34:23 UTC
Deferred to F39 by FESCo
https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting/2023-02-21/fesco.2023-02-21-17.00.log.html

In addition, FESCo requests that the Change "Ostree Native Container (Phase 2, stable)" will have a contingency deadline of F39 Beta Freeze and the Scope of the proposal will be filled

Comment 3 Adam Williamson 2023-08-22 20:46:43 UTC
AFAICT this hasn't really moved forward yet. The 'scope' in the Change has not yet been filled out, even. Colin, what is the status here?

I think this is substantially at risk for F39 at this point.

Comment 4 Colin Walters 2023-08-22 21:46:29 UTC
Some parts of this happened but it's fine to defer this to F40 logically

Comment 5 Adam Williamson 2023-08-22 22:07:49 UTC
OK, thanks.

Comment 6 Jens Petersen 2024-01-19 06:53:03 UTC
Would it be useful to update the wiki page to show more recent status?

Comment 7 Aoife Moloney 2024-02-19 17:33:53 UTC
Hi Colin,

What is the current status of this change? I am doing a changes check in as we are now approaching the 100% complete deadline and Beta freeze so any info you have to share on the progress would be most helpful to understand if this change is on track or not for F40.

Thanks!
Aoife

"We are mostly on track for the first part (producing container images) of this change for F40 on the Atomics desktop side but it's likely not going to be completed in whole for Fedora 40 (no installer and not the default).

So it's probably safe to say it will be for Fedora 41."

so, let's consider it deferred again. I believe this is pretty much implemented for Fedora CoreOS - default FCOS deployments are now using OCI images - but not for anything else yet.

Comment 9 Colin Walters 2024-06-06 19:30:04 UTC
I think this Change is now subsumed by https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/tag/bootc-initiative
