Description ell1e 2022-12-21 13:00:39 UTC
Description of problem:
Activities search for "nemo" doesn't list nemo file manager even if installed. I can literally type "nemo" and enter in a terminal and it launches, yet the activities search pretends to be completely unaware about it. That's a bit baffling and makes using it to launch stuff quite impractical if it doesn't know about it to start with.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
GNOME Shell 43.2

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. sudo dnf install nemo
2. Press super key in GNOME 3 session, type "nemo"

Actual results:
seemingly unrelated junk as search results

Expected results:
nemo file manager is top result since it's installed, has that name, and is ready for use

Additional info:

Comment 1 mcoyle1960 2023-07-18 12:26:31 UTC
The problem is in the file:

/usr/share/applications/nemo.desktop

There is a line (currently 121 in version 5.8.4):

OnlyShowIn=X-Cinnamon;Budgie

The above line prevents gnome-shell from listing Nemo.
It's really an unnecessary limitation and isn't present in any other distro I've run.

@fmuellner @mcatanza

Do you guys care if I make it visible in gnome and you get a double 'files' in your menu?

Comment 3 Michael Catanzaro 2023-09-22 17:56:55 UTC
Go for it. NotShowIn= and OnlyShowIn= prevent users from using the applications they have installed so they should be used only rarely.
