This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora Linux 38 development cycle.
Changing version to 38.

What kind of info are you requesting? Without specifying, it makes it impossible or easy for me to be "providing the information requested of myself", depending on your pov.

I have looked into existing packages, as well as options for building portmidi2 as a separate package. Upstreams switch to a "new" package with fewer features made this really a pita, and the new package does not work well when renaming everything (portmidi -> portmidi2), see bz # 2036166 .

Do you really want the stale version in RHEL/EPEL? Is RHEL/EPEL a distro where you need pygame?

I mean, it's simple to request a branch and push the current portmidi there, I'm just wondering if it's really a good way forward, and what it would be good for.

Hi, are you going branch and build portmidi (1) in epel 9 ?

Comment 5 Michael J Gruber 2023-02-24 16:41:09 UTC
Yes, at some point.

Are you going to answer my questions?

Of course it's simple to "request branch and push the current portmidi". It might simply be the wrong thing to do, given the situation of portmidi upstream, but also the needs of other packages which would prefer to have portmidi2 which they want me to "simply push as an update".

I guess I should simply do the simple things and watch things burn, or should I not?

Going in circles is good for wind mills, not for thrills.

Comment 6 Sergio Basto 2023-02-24 16:58:09 UTC
what question I didn't reply ?

I need pygame for PySol and for python3-pyopengl and python3-pyopengl is needed for xpra

if you new rename everything on portmidi maybe it is better do a new package portmidi2 , like openjpeg2

Comment 7 Sergio Basto 2023-03-21 12:30:03 UTC
I need pygame for PySol and for python3-pyopengl and python3-pyopengl is needed for xpra

all others dependencies are on QA or in stable .

I can build pygame without portmidi but IIRC I lose the sound

FEDORA-EPEL-2023-4a0731be57 has been submitted as an update to Fedora EPEL 9. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2023-4a0731be57

Comment 9 Michael J Gruber 2023-03-21 15:25:42 UTC
Well, I tried to get some insights on the devel list, but the outcome wasn't entirely conclusive for me.

Given that python bindings for portmidi2 are not on the horizon, I'll go with the easy route for portmidi and see about portmidi2 then.
