Description Artem S. Tashkinov 2023-04-22 08:52:13 UTC
It really makes no sense to allow only the root user to use this utility.

Each time I upgrade this package I have to run
```
/sbin/setcap cap_sys_rawio,cap_sys_nice=+ep /usr/bin/turbostat
```

Would be great if your changed the SPEC file to apply these capabilities on install/update.

Thank you.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 38 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 38 on 2024-05-21.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '38'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version. Note that the version field may be hidden.
Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see it.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 38 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

This is a single line change for the spec file.

Is it really so hard or what?

Why does this bug tracker exist in the first place?

What's the point of "maintainers" if they cannot even be bothered to attend to bug reports with ready to use fixes?

Files TWO years ago.

Not a single freaking comment.

It's embarrassing.

You are complaining in a bug against a package that hasn't existed for quite some time. kernel-tools is no longer a component, it is a subpackage of kernel. Your messages were literally being redirected to trash because the component doesn't exist. I happened to find it while looking for something else.
That said, there is certainly some reasoning to not just open turbostat to everyone, in the same reasoning that dmesg is not just open to everyone. I don't think that having to use sudo is such a high bar of entry.

Comment 7 Artem S. Tashkinov 2025-03-28 14:55:23 UTC
First of all, as a Fedora user, do I need to closely follow Fedora packaging just to ensure my bug reports are noticed? That’s an interesting expectation. Could you clarify what else is required? It seems like a lot to ask of users.

Secondly,

/sbin/setcap cap_sys_rawio,cap_sys_nice=+ep /usr/bin/turbostat

does not have any effect.

Turbostat reads RAPL counters, which is a completely safe operation and does not pose any risk of system compromise. In fact, a few years ago, the utility was updated at my request specifically to eliminate the need for sudo, since sudo itself has historically been a frequent source of security vulnerabilities.

What I’m suggesting would ultimately improve security, not weaken it.

Thirdly, Fedora lacks user-friendly tools for non-technical users to configure sudo. RHEL faces the same issue, so this bug report is relevant to both.

Lastly, this component has been inactive for two years, yet there has been no update on Bugzilla, nor has anyone addressed the pending bug reports.

It makes me wonder how many other reports in the bug tracker have been forgotten or left unresolved.

Updates to this bug report result an a email sent to at least a dozen of people. Are they all just ignoring everything? That's interesting.
