Description Aleksandr Sharov 2023-08-02 15:14:54 UTC
Document URL: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html-single/migrating_to_identity_management_on_rhel_8/index#migrate-7-to-8_migrating

Section Number and Name: 1. Migrating your IdM environment from RHEL 7 servers to RHEL 8 servers

Describe the issue: A number of customers still have RHEL7 deployments with winsync in place, set up as described here:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/windows_integration_guide/sync

This method was deprecated for RHEL 8, but it's still there in the code/binaries. So upgrading generally works, however, it's not supported anymore.

Suggestions for improvement: We should definitely mention the fact that winsync is deprecated and not anymore supported in the corresponding migration document, as well as providing clear path for customers to move to trust, which is covered here:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/windows_integration_guide/migrate-sync-trust

Also, it's probably a good idea to mention it around establishing trust instructions for RHEL 8+, that this option was there but was deprecated and is not supported/shipped anymore.
