I noticed there may be changes noted by Arch folks about linking to system MuPDF libraries:

Thanks for the pointer.

I have not tried building current mupdf/PyMuPDF yet because the changes to setup.py and to the new "rebased" implementation were kind of late before the release.

The new rebased implementation will require mupdf bindings which I don't ship yet - because they in turn need mupdf dynamic libraries. We use static so far because upstream did not version the so last time I looked.

All in all, upstream is moving more and to bundling. The standard PyMuPDF builds downloads a full mupdf source copy and builds it with its own config ...

For now, I'd look into getting/PyMuPDF to build with the legacy implementation and see about everything else in a separate step.

I'm not so hopeful about the future of the mupdf ecosystem in Fedora, though. Building against system libraries is off Artifex's radar, and building on non-debian is off zathura upstream's radar, or so it seems.
