Description halginsberg1963 2023-08-15 03:10:30 UTC
Thinkpad T520 loaded with updated Fedora 38 freezes periodically at login (GDM) screen after successfully booting up. This problem has been observed since Fedora 36. I have counted more than 20 successful logins between frozen login screens. When screen loads frozen, the mouse cursor is completely frozen and the keyboard is unresponsive. Only a hard reboot by holding the power key in for several seconds or by unplugging the laptop and removing the battery will shutdown the laptop.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Reboot computer
2.Select most recent kernel in Grub.
3.Wait for laptop to boot into login screen.

Actual Results:
Most of the time the cursor responds to the trackpoint and moves around the screen and I can click on my name, enter my password and login to the desktop. Every 10-20 reboots, the cursor and keyboard are totally non-responsive.

Expected Results:
Every time I reboot, I can login and keyboard and cursor are responsive.

This problem is observed regardless of whether I have selected integrated or discrete (NVS 4200) graphics. I am using a dual-boot system but I rarely boot into Windows 10. I have not observed this problem when I have booted into Windows 10.

Edit to Add: In the past, I have only used the Gnome Display Manager (GDM). I just changed to the LightDM. I will update if it freezes also at some point on bootup or if I no longer observe the problem.

Just booted up and into LightDM. Mouse cursor was frozen as was keyboard. The light was blinking in the password window but I could not access it in any way. Pressing ESC and CTRL-ALT-DEL did nothing. Rebooted by holding down power button for five seconds and everything booted up fine.

Next test: I switched back to GDM then enabled automatic boot to desktop to see whether bypassing the Display Manager would solve the problem. It did not. ON the first reboot, the Desktop appeared as expected (no login screen) but the cursor and keyboard were completely frozen.
