Description Kamil Páral 2023-09-22 14:59:30 UTC
This a tracking bug for the following upstream issue:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/loupe/-/issues/237

The purpose is to have a blocker discussion for that issue.

Comment 1 Edgar Hoch 2023-09-23 16:42:18 UTC
This bug describes only the crash of loupe, not of linux, right?
This is a new package, introduced in Fedora 39, and there are other image viewer which doesn't crash?
Then I think this is not qualified as a blocker.

Comment 2 Adam Williamson 2023-09-25 15:57:41 UTC
-4 in https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review/issue/1346 , marking rejected. For the record, though, Edgar's comment is inaccurate: Loupe replaced EOG as the default image viewer in Workstation, and is the only thing-for-viewing-images (aside from Firefox, I guess) that would be installed by default on a new system. But we still decided printing from the image viewer is probably not that common.

Comment 3 Edgar Hoch 2023-09-25 16:14:05 UTC
Sorry, I have never used only the default packages of a product release. I have always installed many additional packages (using "Everything", excluding all *-product packages).

But your are right, if there is the only image viewer installed by default for a preconfigured set of packages for users, this image viewer should work. So, either fixing the problem in loupe or using another image viewer that works (since years) is a good solution, which does not block the release.

About "the only image viewer": Do you think of environments where a workstation is running without installation on a disk, or without internet connection so no additional packages can be installed?

Comment 4 Kamil Páral 2023-09-26 08:24:36 UTC
Hi Edgar, this is best discussed in the blocker review ticket. But to answer your question, we simply want the default applications to work reasonably well. That includes all scenarios - running from a LiveCD, running without an internet connection, but also just a regular case where online connection is available, but we still don't want people to need to resort to installing a different image viewer just to print a picture. But in this case we've decided that we won't block F39 release on that.

Hi Kamil, thank you for your answer!

Comment 6 Kamil Páral 2023-09-27 12:06:48 UTC
We need a gtk fix backported from https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/6122

And we might need another one from https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/loupe/-/issues/243 , once it's ready

I can confirm printing to a printer and printing to a file both work now. Thanks.
