Description Simon Fayer 2024-01-08 11:23:18 UTC
Description of problem:

The aarch64 build of ganglia in EPEL9 reports random data in the "machine_type" field which prevents it from working. This appears to be a regression of bug 1585015 which was previously patched, but the patch no longer seems to be present in the current version.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
ganglia-gmond-3.7.2-40.el9.aarch64

How reproducible:
Occurs on every machine_type report on aarch64 architecture.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run gmond with local collector on default port.
2. Wait a moment for initial values to be reported.
3. Get machine_type with a command such as "nc -v localhost 8649  | grep machine_type".

Actual results:
Machine type returns random bytes:
<METRIC NAME="machine_type" VAL="&#F2;&#B2;&#?0;e" TYPE="string" UNITS="" TN="28" TMAX="1200" DMAX="0" SLOPE="zero">

Expected results:
Machine type returns aarch64:
<METRIC NAME="machine_type" VAL="aarch64" TYPE="string" UNITS="" TN="28" TMAX="1200" DMAX="0" SLOPE="zero">

Additional info:

As reported in the original ticket, this can be fixed by this patch:
https://github.com/ganglia/monitor-core/commit/fcf4c7c46a7f4bfbe845018ae5fc82a07269b444

It would also be good to have this patch, which prevents the uninitialized bytes on unrecognised platforms:
https://github.com/ganglia/monitor-core/commit/9300c1ee89125c023c1aa25a53ae4aaa973e1698

Would it please be possible for this to be patched in the EPEL RPMs again?
