I just installed gcc rpm's on my alpha and my intel boxes.

rpm -q gcc*.rpm  says that none of the gcc rpm's are installed.
rpm -Uvh gcc*.rpm says that the rpm's are already installed.

I attempted

rpm --rebuilddb

but this did not fix the problem.

Both of these are rpm version 4.0 and RH 7.0

You meant to do
	rpm -q gcc
or
	rpm -qa | grep gcc
not
	rpm -q gcc*.rpm
