I have two CD drives, one is an IDE drive (/dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc ; mount
on /mnt/cdrom) and the other is a SCSI drive (/dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/scd0 ;
mount on /mnt/cdrom1) 

the IDE drive works -- I can mount CDs fine

the SCSI drive doesn't... when I go to mount a CD I get this error:

# mount /dev/cdrom1
mount: /dev/cdrom1 has wrong major or minor number

some add'l info:
# ls -l /dev/cdrom1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            4 Dec 21 12:32 /dev/cdrom1 -> scd0
# ls -l /dev/scd0  
brw-------    1 crunge   disk      11,   0 Dec 12 16:26 /dev/scd0

The beta includes modulare IDE.  If you have the ide-cdrom module loaded (try
"modprobe ide-probe-mod" and "modprobe ide-cd"), this should work.  The
installer in the development tree loads the IDE modules, and newer mkinitrd's
will do the same if the module is loaded when the initrd is created, so this
should be fixed.
