Description of problem:
When I ssh into Fedora 40, I can't run Emacs unless I give it the -nw option. This is a regression, as I did not observe this problem with Fedora 39.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Emacs 29.3

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. ssh into Fedora 40
2. run the shell command "emacs"
3.

Actual results:
Emacs outputs "(emacs:32326): Gtk-WARNING **: 23:02:45.536: cannot open display:" and fails.

Expected results:
A terminal-only Emacs session.

Additional info:
My terminal type is xterm-256color. If I run the shell command

env -i TERM=xterm-256color HOME=/tmp /usr/bin/emacs

I get the same error, so this does not appear to be anything in my environment.

I have pushed a patch to address this to rawhide.  I will await feedback before considering it for Fedora 40.

Thanks. Is it a patch that Emacs should install upstream? I can arrange for that.

Thanks for the offer, but the patch will not be acceptable to Emacs upstream, because it does not work with the GDK quartz or win32 backends.  See the discussion at https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=63555
