Description Xavier Bachelot 2024-10-18 16:58:15 UTC
Hi,

Could you please branch and build python-black for EPEL 10 ?
It is needed to build another package.

Regards,
Xavier

Which one?

Comment 2 Xavier Bachelot 2024-10-18 17:05:04 UTC
From https://tdawson.fedorapeople.org/epel/willit/epel10/status-wont-install.html

Package: python3-hypothesis+cli-6.104.2-5.el10_0 (2024-09-23)
Error: Problem: conflicting requests - nothing provides python3.12dist(black) >= 19.10~b0 needed by python3-hypothesis+cli-6.104.2-5.el10_0.noarch from epel10 - nothing provides python3.12dist(rich) >= 9 needed by python3-hypothesis+cli-6.104.2-5.el10_0.noarch from epel10

Package: python3-hypothesis+ghostwriter-6.104.2-5.el10_0 (2024-09-23)
Error: Problem: conflicting requests - nothing provides python3.12dist(black) >= 19.10~b0 needed by python3-hypothesis+ghostwriter-6.104.2-5.el10_0.noarch from epel10

Comment 3 Miro Hrončok 2024-10-18 17:50:28 UTC
I guess the solution is to not build those extras on epel10.

Anyway, this is maintained by Christian Heimes, so I let him lead here. I personally (as a co-maintainer) would be reluctant to maintain black for 10+ years while maintaining backward compatibility.

Comment 4 Christian Heimes 2024-10-22 12:00:36 UTC
I agree with Miro. Let's not add black to EPEL 10.

In addition to the long term maintenance, I have an additional concerns: No package should have a dependency on python3.12dist(black) or python3-black. Black does not provide a stable Python API, https://black.readthedocs.io/en/stable/faq.html#does-black-have-an-api . The only API is the "black" command line interface.

Comment 5 Carl George 🎩 2024-10-24 03:24:28 UTC
That's an understandable point about black, however upstream does declare it as a dependency in both the cli and ghostwriter extras.

https://github.com/HypothesisWorks/hypothesis/blob/hypothesis-python-6.104.2/hypothesis-python/setup.py#L52
https://github.com/HypothesisWorks/hypothesis/blob/hypothesis-python-6.104.2/hypothesis-python/setup.py#L54

Here's a PR to remove the cli and ghostwriter extra subpackages, as well as disable the django and codemods extras on EPEL 10 because they're missing dependencies. It also enables the test suite, which should help prevent publishing uninstallable subpackages in the future.

Comment 6 Carl George 🎩 2024-10-26 19:11:32 UTC
That PR has been merged and published, so the uninstallable subpackages that were driving this request are gone now.
