Description aierizerdaniel 2024-11-09 00:13:33 UTC
I just bought a pair of Sony WH-1000XM5 buds. They work fine with my Android phone and my Windows laptop. It doesn't work though with my Fedora laptop.

In system settings Bluetooth GUI, it shows error "The setup of WF-1000XM5 has failed".

Looking at the journalctl logs, this is what I've found:

org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled

kf.bluezqt: PendingCall Error: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

In the URL attached there is a Reddit post with this issue. Since there are multiple users that said they experience the same thing, I would guess it's not really related to the Sony product per se.

I guessed I must have a wrong config or something so I tried connecting the device to a USB boot of fresh Fedora 41 and it also didn't work there. I tried with Fedora 41 beta, and there it was working fine. So it's something Fedora 41 specific.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have fresh install of Fedora 41
2. Try to connect Sony (or presumably also other) buds
3. Get org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled error
Actual Results:
The buds are not connected, I can't use them

Expected Results:
I should be able to use the bluetooth buds

Connecting like this worked:

$ sudo bluetoothctl
$ scan on
$ devices
$ trust <MAC of headphones>
$ connect <MAC of headphones>
