Description Fedora Release Engineering 2025-01-22 20:26:07 UTC
grib_api failed to build from source in Fedora rawhide/f42

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=127983258

For details on the mass rebuild see:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_42_Mass_Rebuild
Please fix grib_api at your earliest convenience and set the bug's status to
ASSIGNED when you start fixing it. If the bug remains in NEW state for 8 weeks,
grib_api will be orphaned. Before branching of Fedora 43,
grib_api will be retired, if it still fails to build.

Comment 4 Jos de Kloe 2025-01-24 08:16:23 UTC
I think this package should be retired.

grib_api has now been unmaintained upstream for over 6 years. It is replaced by eccodes for those architectures that supports it.
Upstream writes on https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/ECC/ecCodes+Home:

ecCodes is now the primary GRIB encoding/decoding package used at ECMWF. GRIB-API is no longer maintained (as of December 2018). Replacing GRIB-API with ecCodes is expected to be transparent for current GRIB-API users. In particular the "grib_" functions are included in the ecCodes library. Users are strongly advised to start the migration process.

See also: https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/ECC/GRIB-API+migration

Unfortunately eccodes does not support the i686, ppc64, and armv7hl architectures. If users would need this I recommend them to file a request at ECMWF to implement this for eccodes.

This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

I agree. The only dep that I found was gdl, and I doubt anyone will miss grib support on s390x. I'll retire after I've built the gdl version that drops grib support on s390x.
