Description Michael Riss 2025-06-24 13:56:37 UTC
1. Please describe the problem:
After today's update to kernel 6.15.3 and (amd-ucode-)firmware-20250613 my laptop screen goes black after I type in my luks password and the system switches from initramfs to the actual / root file system. The actual system still works (ssh login is possible).
I report it for the kernel but it may also be related to the simultaneous firmware package update.

2. What is the Version-Release number of the kernel:
6.15.3-200.fc42.x86_64

3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue
*first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at
   https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 :
Last good kernel version was 6.14.11 with (amd-ucode-)firmware-20250509-1.fc42.noarch and these two still work. The laptop actually runs Kinoite, so I can switch back and forth between the old and the new setup. Old works, the new one shows the black screen.

4. Can you reproduce this issue? If so, please provide the steps to reproduce
   the issue below:
Yes, see 3.

5. Does this problem occur with the latest Rawhide kernel? To install the
Rawhide kernel, run ``sudo dnf install fedora-repos-rawhide`` followed by
   ``sudo dnf update --enablerepo=rawhide kernel``:
I didn't test this yet. Installing Rawhide kernels on a Kinoite seems ... risky/impossible without a full rebase?

6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel?:
Yes, rpmfusion Nvidia drivers.

7. Please attach the kernel logs. You can get the complete kernel log
   for a boot with ``journalctl --no-hostname -k > dmesg.txt``. If the
issue occurred on a previous boot, use the journalctl ``-b`` flag.
I attach the logs with "before" - last known good version - and "after" - with the problematic update. I also include the logs from my desktop machine which does not suffer from the black screen problem, but also shows very similar warnings and errors in the journal.
I believe the crucial error concerning the black monitor in the Laptop-after log is the line:
Jun 24 12:01:01 kernel: amdgpu 0000:09:00.0: [drm] enabling link 0 failed: 15

8 Further notes:
- I did try the amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 kernel parameter as the laptop has a variable refresh rate display. This parameter did not solve the problem.
- As visible in the journal logs the new kernel/firmware combo throws warnings about problems loading the firmware and then lots of errors.
- I also run a non-Kinoite Fedora 42 on my desktop and there I get the same/similar error messages, but there the output to the attached HDMI display works, albeit with only <=60Hz instead of up to 144Hz which it should be able to. I cannot swear that it was able to do 144Hz before the upgrade, maybe the onboard HDMI connector or the (quite old) HDMI cable are limiting the framerate to 60Hz.
Hardware:
Laptop:
ASUS G713PV with AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX CPU
Desktop:
DIY machine with Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX and AMD Ryzen R9 7950x3D
On both it's the iGPU which is used with the amdgpu driver.

- Despite the errors the command vulkaninfo still is able to report capabilities for the AMD GPU on both machines. So either the amdgpu driver still has some functionality left or the vulkan ICD provides all the capability information without checking whether the actual amdgpu driver is still able to perform them.

Reproducible: Always

same here with an amd 9600x boot stops at drm initializing amdgpu:

amdgpu: 0000:0b:00.0: amdgpu: Fetched VBIOS from VFCT
amdgpu: ATOM BIOS: 102-RAPHAEL-008

This is not a kernel problem but a firmware problem. I had to downgrade amd-ucode-firmware and amd-gpu-firmware to 20250311-1, rebuild initramfs (sudo dracut -f) and reboot. system working fine. linux-firmware package needs an update.

Comment 8 louisgtwo 2025-06-26 03:41:04 UTC
I opened a bug for linux-firmware package #2374871. Hopefully can get the proper amd firmware for kernel-6.15

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-7feed8b25a did solve it for me.
