Description Xaver Hugl 2025-06-24 14:10:28 UTC
See the linked URL - it's a firmware bug, fixed with https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=a26e413e7481d12ab5a53f77e0cdde2d5be937d8. I see it since the last Fedora 42 update on my system.

Can we backport the commit? It's quite a severe issue

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Just move the cursor around on an affected system
Actual Results:
Randomly but rather frequently, a second cursor shows, and the display area below the cursor flickers gray.

Expected Results:
No flicker

Additional Information:
It can be worked around by forcing a software cursor

Comment 1 Hannes Landström 2025-06-24 17:15:16 UTC
I have the same issue since I updated earlier today.
It seems to work fine when I use 6.14 kernel but starts happening on 6.15.

Comment 2 chris.chianelli 2025-06-24 20:11:31 UTC
Can confirm issue; 6.14 kernel works fine, 6.15 kernel has gray rectangle flicker below cursor. Dual monitor setup; one monitor 1080p, the other 4K. Occurs in both XOrg and Wayland. AMD GPU 7900 XTX.

Comment 3 Dennis Jacobfeuerborn 2025-06-24 20:29:03 UTC
Can confirm as well. For me there is also occasional severe flickering of the entire screen though. Booting into a 6.14 kernel seems to work around this issue. I'm using Wayland on a Radeon 7900 XTX.

Does downgrading the firmware also fix the issue?

Comment 5 Xaver Hugl 2025-06-25 12:12:47 UTC
For me, downgrading just linux-firmware to 20250311-1.fc42 on its own does not fix it. I also have to use kernel 6.14 as well to avoid the glitches.

The package that contains the GPU firmware is amd-gpu-firmware, the base linux-firmware contains other generic firmware so if you just did that I wouldn't expect that to fix it.

Comment 7 Xaver Hugl 2025-06-25 12:31:15 UTC
Ah, I didn't know it was split. Oddly enough, downgrading amd-gpu-firmware also doesn't fully fix it. Either I'm doing something wrong, or there's also a kernel bug.

Comment 8 Peter Robinson 2025-06-25 12:48:10 UTC
there's probably kernel bugs too, but did you rebuild your initrd to ensure the right firmware is in it?

Comment 9 Xaver Hugl 2025-06-25 12:55:05 UTC
Ah, that's what I was missing, I thought installing the package did that already. After rebuilding the initrd, downgrading does indeed fix it.

Comment 10 Peter Robinson 2025-06-25 12:57:53 UTC
The kernel package does that

Comment 11 Derek Enz 2025-06-25 16:38:18 UTC
On my AMD 5600G system which has integrated graphics, running F42 KDE, Wayland and kernel 6.15.3-200. I cannot repro the issue. If that helps.

Comment 20 Simon de la Court 2025-07-08 21:20:41 UTC
Hi, I'm running Linux fedora 6.15.4-200.fc42.x86_64, with the following system specs;

- AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X × 32
- AMD Radeon™ RX 7600
- Dell UltraSharp U4025QW connected with DP

And on 120Hz I still get a duplicated flickering cursor on the left half of the screen, on 60Hz it is gone.
