Description Fabio Valentini 2025-08-13 13:05:24 UTC
compiling the package for the sequoia-openpgp crate fails since the update to Rust 1.89, with an error from rustc-llvm:

Instruction does not dominate all uses!
  %1773 = add i64 %1768, 1, !dbg !945749
  %1770 = mul i64 %1773, 8, !dbg !945749
in function _ZN122_$LT$sequoia_openpgp..crypto..backend..rust..symmetric..EcbEncrypt$u20$as$u20$sequoia_openpgp..crypto..symmetric..Mode$GT$7encrypt28_$u7b$$u7b$closure$u7d$$u7d$17hb30c7efc1a63f2abE
rustc-LLVM ERROR: Broken function found, compilation aborted!

This happens on Fedora Rawhide, 43, and 42. Not sure about Fedora 41 yet, since Rust 1.89 didn't land in stable there yet.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
$ fedpkg clone rust-sequoia-openpgp && cd rust-sequoia-openpgp && fedpkg build --scratch --srpm
Actual Results:
Error from LLVM.

Expected Results:
Compiles successful.

> This happens on Fedora Rawhide, 43, and 42. Not sure about Fedora 41 yet, since Rust 1.89 didn't land in stable there yet.

I can reproduce this on 42+, but I can't reproduce it locally on 41 with the build from updates-testing. This would imply that LLVM 19 is not affected.

Comment 2 Josh Stone 2025-08-14 19:29:43 UTC
I can only reproduce this on upstream LLVM 20 after adding Fedora's cherry-pick of this fix:
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/commit/59c6d70ed8120b8864e5f796e2bf3de5518a0ef0

Using LLVM from that commit directly also fails, but main passes, which allows further bisection. This commit fixes it:
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/commit/dde30a47313bf52fef02bbcb1de931a8d725659f

Adding that cherry-pick onto 20 also fixes the problem there, so hopefully that's sufficient overall. I'll send a patch for the llvm package.

Filed https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-118212 for the same issue happening in c9s after the Rust 1.89 update there.
