I don't have the tomcat init script in front of me, but the tomcat startup command could be made default shell-independent like this: sudo su - tomcat -c "bash -c \"export VAR=VAL; export VAR2=VAL2; echo starting tomcat command\"" But really, I question if this is even worthwhile. I see no good reason for using csh as tomcat's default shell, and many good reasons for not doing it (such as this bug). I'd prefer to just close this bug. As far as I'm concerned, nobody should csh for anything, but that's beside the point. The point is, the command is not "shell independent", 'su - tomcat -c "bash ..."', doesn't work. 'su tomcat -c "bash ..."', should, and "bash -l" might. You don't know when someone su's to tomcat and messes with its login environment. So why make daemon startup script dependent on things outside of your control? Fedora apologizes that these issues have not been resolved yet. We're sorry it's taken so long for your bug to be properly triaged and acted on. We appreciate the time you took to report this issue and want to make sure no important bugs slip through the cracks.
