*** Bug 24441 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** As far as I can see, it is cpp which is segfaulting, so it has nothing to do with glibc. So, a few questions: 1) do you have latest gcc errata installed (gcc-2.96-69 and cpp-2.96-6 2) is this reproduceable (ie. if you cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.0/kernel and rerun the command you see before the segfault, do you get it again)? 3) if yes, what exact kernel tarball it is (is it vanilla 2.4.0 or are there any patches applied etc.)? What .config did you use? Answers in order. 1) Yes I have both of the latest updates you mentioned. 2) No, it is not always reproducible, but this kernel just would not compile no matter what I do with it. Neither the 2.2-16 or the 2.2-18. On Red Hat 6.2 it compiled 2.2.16-3 just fine. 3) Plain Vanilla 2.4.0, no patches at all. The config was: # # Automatically generated make config: don't edit # CONFIG_X86=y CONFIG_ISA=y # CONFIG_SBUS is not set CONFIG_UID16=y # # Code maturity level options # # CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL is not set # Both gcc and cpp are deterministic applications which should give reproduceable behaviour (either not fail in any identical invocation, or fail always), of course unless you get out of virtual memory, so especially if it would crash on random files, I'd highly suspect hardware (it may stress the machine in ways older compilers did not, whatever) and if not that, then some kernel cache corruption. New Info !! This is NOT a bug ! As it turned out it was a => hardware related problem <= . The AMD K6-III+/450 MHz cpu I am using can not handle compilation of the Linux kernel unless I drop it down to 400 or lower. Now the kernel compiles fine. Please don't yell at me... ;) Cheers: frank kruchio |
