A flaw was found in catdoc. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to process a specially crafted Microsoft Excel (.xls) file. Because the application fails to properly validate string lengths when parsing spreadsheet records, it reads beyond allocated memory buffers. This can result in a Denial of Service (DoS) by crashing the process or lead to information disclosure of adjacent memory contents.

Description OSIDB Bzimport 2026-10-15 19:12:46 UTC
catdoc through 0.95 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in copy_unicode_string() in src/xlsparse.c that allows attackers to read past buffers via an unchecked string character count. Attackers can supply a crafted .xls file declaring 0xFFFF two-byte characters in LABEL, STRING, or SST records to disclose adjacent memory through xls2csv output or crash the process.
