A flaw was found in cfitsio. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by supplying a specially crafted Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) file containing compressed image data with invalid dither parameters. When processed by an application using the library, this flaw triggers an out-of-bounds heap read that can cause the application to crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS), or potentially lead to unauthorized information disclosure by leaking heap memory.

Description OSIDB Bzimport 2026-10-15 19:34:15 UTC
CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the imcompress.c unquantize helpers that allows attackers to read memory before the fits_rand_value table via a zero or negative ZDITHER0 seed. Attackers can supply a crafted FITS file with a SUBTRACTIVE_DITHER_1 compressed image, read through fits_open_file() and fits_read_pix(), to cause crashes or leak heap contents in decoded pixels.
