A flaw was found in hickory-proto. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by exhausting system CPU resources. When encoding Domain Name System (DNS) messages, the BinEncoder component performs inefficient repeated searches to compress domain names. An attacker can exploit this issue by sending crafted DNS messages containing numerous records, triggering excessive processing overhead and causing the application to become unresponsive.

Description OSIDB Bzimport 2026-11-08 01:53:03 UTC
Hickory DNS hickory-proto from 0.3.1 before 0.26.1 contains a denial of service vulnerability in BinEncoder that allows remote attackers to exhaust CPU through quadratic-time name compression. Attackers can send malicious DNS messages with many records that add many candidate labels and trigger repeated linear scans during encoding, amplifying CPU exhaustion.
