Description redhat-bugzilla 2001-05-06 00:56:26 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 4.0)

Description of problem:
As posted by another guy with the same problem on comp.os.linux.networking:

I've been called thickheaded before but please bear with me. I'm trying to
see if the stock drivers in Redhat-7.1 will support my Lucent WaveLAN
Silver
card with my Lucent APs at work and LinkSys AP at home. First, the
hardware
appears to be working properly as all is well when running Win2000. I've
modified wireless.opts in /etc/pcmcia to add the network name (ESSID) and
encryption keys. After inserting the card, I hear the expected two beeps
and see (I've added echo's to the scripts) it run ifup eth0 (it's setup for
DHCP). I can do an 'ifconfig eth0' and see everything normal except for
the
IP addressing being empty. I can run 'iwconfig eth0' and see the proper
encryption key, channel, and ESSID. I can run 'tcpdump' and see the
0.0.0.0.bootpc->255.255.255.255.bootps broadcast followed by a directed
response from my DHCP server addressed to the proper MAC address. Neither
'pump' nor 'dhcpcd' ever seem to see the response. If I try and manually
reconfigure the interface and starting pinging local IP addresses, I see
the
arp requests and proper responses but my machine never appears to receive
the packets.

Oh, I've backed out all of the 'ipchains' rules Redhat setup by default and
have check to see that I'm getting interrupts properly looking at
/proc/modules.

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Red Hat 7.1
2. Insert Lucent Orinco Wavelan Silver card with latest firmware
3. wait for pump to fail obtaining IP address

Actual Results:
an IP address is not obtained

Expected Results:
an IP address should have been assigned to eth0

Additional info:

Works fine in 7.0

Comment 1 Arjan van de Ven 2001-05-06 09:50:24 UTC
Phil: could you look at this ?

Comment 2 Bryce Nesbitt 2001-06-25 18:49:07 UTC
I have the same problem. I can move the card to another machine, so it's not
the card or the network. It worked before the upgrgrade to 7.1.

First problem is that after wvlan_cs starts it runs "pcmcia/network start" which
RedHat seems to modifed to do nothing. Second, iwconfig never see it.

jt.com the driver author is aware of this. It's a RedHat specifc
problem.

Comment 3 Arjan van de Ven 2001-06-25 18:54:20 UTC
The 2.4.3-12 kernel that was released last friday has a much updated wavelan
driver. Also, someone reported that our configscripts didn't work for custom
configurations; I can make an updated kernel-pcmcia-cs package available if
someone is prepared to test them. (I don't have access to wavelan cards).

Comment 4 Niklas Fondberg 2001-07-08 22:55:58 UTC
I'm willing to test it with my lucent orinoco silvercard latest firmware

Comment 5 R P Herrold 2001-07-27 17:31:04 UTC
I have a perhaps similar datapoint -- I have a PCI carries, and Gold Orinico
which WILL recognize in an older montehr setting, but not a newer one.

Older (hostname Rivervalley)

Card is at eth1
