Description Thomas Fitzsimmons 2008-03-07 15:45:04 UTC
Description of problem:

rpmlint is producing uncompressed-zip warnings for IcedTea jar files.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

$ rpmlint --version
rpmlint version 0.82 Copyright (C) 1999-2007 Frederic Lepied, Mandriva

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Build IcedTea RPMs:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433070

2. rpmlint -i $rpm_topdir/RPMS/i386/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.1.b06.fc8.i386.rpm

Actual results:

java-1.6.0-openjdk.i386: W: uncompressed-zip
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/lib/jsse.jar
The zip file is not compressed.

java-1.6.0-openjdk.i386: W: uncompressed-zip
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/lib/resources.jar
The zip file is not compressed.

java-1.6.0-openjdk.i386: W: uncompressed-zip
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/lib/rt.jar
The zip file is not compressed.

Expected results:

This is Rawhide rpmlint:

$ rpm -q rpmlint
rpmlint-0.82-3.fc9

Comment 2 Ville Skyttä 2008-03-07 17:56:17 UTC
I'm pretty ambivalent about this warning, but before doing anything about it I'd
like to hear why do you think the warning is invalid and why is it desirable to
ship those jars uncompressed. Java startup speed (any numbers available)? Do
you think all jars should be shipped uncompressed, or shouldn't we care at all
whether they're compressed or not? What about other zip files?

Comment 3 Ville Skyttä 2008-03-07 17:57:14 UTC
(By "all jars" I meant all jars in any package, not only in *icedtea.)

Comment 4 Thomas Fitzsimmons 2008-03-07 19:30:55 UTC
Yes, these jars are shipped uncompressed to minimize load time. I timed "Hello,
World" running 1000 times on my unloaded x86 machine:

#!/bin/sh

for i in `seq 1 1000`
do
  /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/bin/java Hello >& /dev/null
done

Compressed rt.jar:

real 3m28.033s
user 2m20.669s
sys 0m36.194s

Uncompressed rt.jar:

real 3m1.971s
user 1m51.603s
sys 0m36.362s

jar files generally contain code. Whereas applet jar files should be compressed
to minimize download time, jar files shipped in rpms should be optimized to
minimize load time [1]. For these reasons I don't think the uncompressed
warning should apply to jars.

Given that zip files are compressed by default it's unlikely that a zip file
will be shipped uncompressed accidentally, so perhaps the warning shouldn't
apply to zip files either.

Adding patrickm to the cc list as the manager of the disabled user fitzsim who reported this bug

Comment 7 Bug Zapper 2009-06-09 23:42:31 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 9 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 9. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '9'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 9's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 9 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 8 Bug Zapper 2009-07-14 16:40:28 UTC
Fedora 9 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2009-07-10. Fedora 9 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
