the mouse pointer doesn't work after pressing ctrl-alt-f1, right? It's a fairly common X driver bug where pressing ctrl-alt-f1 doesn't correctly restore text mode. That is correct. ( An error: Summary should read - Do NOT drop to textmode...) Question: - you think this should have been filed against the xorg-drv package ? If that is so, please feel free to do such correction if possible. can you attach and xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this system? Created attachment 306330 [details]

- Missed to notice what/when and upgrade took place that seem to have fixed this problem. - Checked installed packages, current: xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.8.0-4.fc8.x86_64 - The hardware is a Radeon-X1250, checked info from xorg-team.org However, it does not tolerate movie applications. Not responding to anything but power-off. This may also happen after some time of usage, using ordinary programs. No clue of the reason. ( found similar stories at Xorg, etc ) In some cases an unexplained high activity of disk usage may force one to shut-down in this way, which doesn't leave any answers of possible cause. Used system-monitor, top, etc. - but they freeze up as well. ( Perhaps related to memory/swap ? may happen using Firefox, which seem to have come up with several problems recently ) In closing: It does drop to textmode now, but there seem to be something more with the driver. Added note: I am aware that Fedora have excluded some movie/sound formats, but the programs should behave, not crash the whole screen, and not freeze up the computer. I don't have hardware that run Fedora 8, so .. I have no idea what is working on a regular machine. This message is a reminder that Fedora 8 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 8. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '8'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 8's end of life.
