FWIW, I'm pretty sure this is a window manager bug after talking to Havoc and Matthias on #fedora-desktop. In a nutshell, the WM is too eager to implement focus steal prevention (which we're trying to circumvent). It affects metacity too. I haven't filed a bug yet but it should be pretty trivial to come up with a minimal test case. Changing version to '9' as part of upcoming Fedora 9 GA.
