Description Pete Zaitcev 2008-07-30 02:24:04 UTC
Description of problem:

The gpk-update-icon is present, even though:
a) I don't see the icon
b) I don't need front-end elements of PackageKit dangling about
(I can believe that we may need packagekitd, although even that
   is rather doubtful).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

PackageKit-0.2.3-4.20080618.fc10

How reproducible:

Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log in
2. Run ps
3. Observe 7MB RSS wasted (and it pulls quite a number of libraries too)

Actual results:

Wasted memory

Expected results:

No unnecessary gpk-update-icon process

Additional info:

How hard can it be to launch UI components as needed? This is what
we have menus for.

Comment 1 Richard Hughes 2008-07-30 06:58:51 UTC
Sure, gpk-update-icon is resposible for checking for updates according to the
user policy, handling any errors and is also responsible for watching certain
files created by udev so we can prompt for firmware installation. Most users
don't remember to run "yum update" on a daily occurance.

If you really want to get rid of the GUI part, just go to
Preferences->Personal->Sessions and uncheck PackageKit Update Applet.

Hope that helps. Richard.
