Description Mark Locascio 2008-10-18 15:15:31 UTC
Description of problem:
I ran a yum update on the Fedora 10 beta running on an old P3 Dell Inspiron 8000. Got a new kernel (2.6.27.2-23.rc1.fc10.i686) and rebooted. It goes into kernel panic on boot. If I add modprobedebug to the kernel line, it looks like the last module (or, close to the last... it happens fast) to load before the panic is joydev.ko. It may come slightly after that, but that's the last one I can read.

This problem is similar, but perhaps not the same as the other bug I reported which happens when trying to boot the live CD (bug #465684)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.27.2-23.rc1.fc10.i686

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install F10 beta on a P3 Dell laptop
2. Update kernel to 2.6.27.2-23.rc1.fc10.i686
3. Reboot

Actual results:
Kernel panic

Expected results:
Boots

Forgot to mention, the previous kernel version from an update I ran last weekend was 2.6.27-3.fc10.i686. That version works fine... in fact, I'm running it now.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 10 development cycle.
Changing version to '10'.

Mark,
Could you confirm this bug exists in F10 as released ?

Comment 4 Mark Locascio 2009-02-08 20:32:02 UTC
Yes.

I think this may be the same problem as bug #465684. I can work around it by adding the "console=ttyS0,9600" line to the kernel boot options.

I just ran a yum update today, and I still need to do this for the newest kernel (2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686).

Comment 5 François Cami 2009-02-08 23:22:07 UTC
Mark,
I'm closing this as duplicate of the other bug, since you're using the same machine and need the same workaround.
